Having your home be an oasis can do wonders for your state of mind throughout the day. Â A peaceful, relaxing environment is essential for your well-being.
Is your home your oasis? Â If not, here are some tips to create a more relaxing environment.
Clear the Clutter
You don't have to be a hoarder to experience clutter. Â If you have too many possessions in a space that doesn't fit them, you have clutter. Â It doesn't just affect your ability to move, but also your ability to think. Â Streamlining can improve your stress levels, life satisfaction, physical health, and cognition. (1)
Color
The color of your living space can also affect your feelings and mood. Â Light colors are expansive and airy, making your room appear larger and brighter. Â Darker colors are sophisticated and warm.Â
Here are some colors and the feeling they will evoke in a room.
Blue - For a home spa, this is an ideal color as it is said to bring down blood pressure and slow respiration and heart rate. Â It is calming, serene and relaxing.
Green - Considered the most restful color for the eye, green combines the refreshing quality of blue and the cheerfulness of yellow. Â For many, it has associations with nature and brings to mind the lush green of grass, trees, and forests. Like blue, it is a refreshing and tranquil color.

Lavender - Also considered to bring the same soothing quality as blue, but without the risk of feeling chilly. Other feelings associated with lavender and other purple hues include royalty, sensuality, wisdom, and mystery.
Neutrals (Black, Gray, White and Brown) - Flexible colors to decorate with that can have color added to liven things up or subtracted to calm things down.  These colors can convey cleanliness, freshness, and simplicity, though some find white to be empty and unfriendly.  To combat this, accessorize with wood and glass elements or bits of black.
Red - Raises a room's energy. Â Best for rooms that are used for social gatherings, red has been shown to raise blood pressure, and speed respiration and heart rate. (2)
Lighting
Lighting is such an important part of any room and should be considered prominently, rather than an afterthought. Â The right light can lift your mood, inspire productivity, and enliven your day to day moments. Â Think about layering light, such as a decorative ceiling fixture, accent and task lights. (3)
When relaxing, consider lowering the lights and allow the glow from candles or a salt lamp to soothe you.
Himalayan salt lamps are to believed to filter dust, mold, mildew, and pet dander from the air.
Plants and Flowers
Not only do plants and flowers look beautiful in a room, they help reduce stress and create a feeling of well-being, improve air quality, and help lower background noise. (4) Â Researchers in the United Kingdom found that people who live around nature feel much happier than those who don't. Â This includes having greenery in the home. Â For those of you who don't have time to care for plants, consider cacti and other similar plants that don't need as much water.
Fragrance
Aromatherapy has been shown to have relaxing effects on the body by activating the hypothalamus, the area of the brain that sends messages to other parts of the body. Â A simple inhalation of an aroma can activate the immune system, affect blood pressure, and stimulate digestion. Look for essential oils or candles. Here are some of our favorites:
Lavender -Â has a soothing effect on nerves and can relieve nervous tension and depression as well as treat headaches and migraines.
Lemon - helps alleviate headaches and fever, and is a quick mood enhancer.
Jasmine - used for hundreds of years in parts of Asia as a natural remedy for depression, anxiety, emotional stress, low libido and insomnia.
Rosemary - In addition to improving memory retention, rosemary has stimulating properties that fight physical exhaustion, headaches and mental fatigue.
Cinnamon - said to stimulate circulation, reduce stress, relieve pain, fight off infections, and improve digestion.
